Jack was a 12 year old with ASD, he struggled with the social dynamics of school until it became increasing difficult for him to leave home. He became progressing disengaged with mainstream school and developed physical and emotional anxiety.
When he joined the NVA as a Key stage 3 student, steadily his behaviour at home improved, his attendance rose year on year from 58% in 2012/13 to 73% and finally to 89% in 2014/15. His assignment submission also saw a similar increase, from 2% when he started to 45% in his last year. Jack continued with the NVA to study GCSE Psychology, Maths, ICT, English and ITQ Level 2 Certificate. Last year Jack’s mum said she was thrilled with the change seen in her son, she commented:
“I think the flexibility of Nisai, in the way they are able to cater for him as an individual, has helped him immensely. If there has been an issue with the timetable, the subject or even just attendance, the Student Support Staff have been brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. His counsellor has also commented on the change in Jack. He has been seeing him since mainstream school and has commented recently that although it’s taken a long time, he can’t believe the difference in Jack – from the boy who wouldn’t even engage freely in conversation, to what is not a much more, confident, articulate and for the most part, polite young man.”
When Jack’s received his GCSE results he had achieve Grade A-C in all his subjects and has gone on to study A Level Maths, Economics and Computing at college where he has already scored and predicted A’s and B’s.
