Holly, a 17 year old young lady with autism, extremely low self-esteem and almost no confidence joined Nisai in December 2017, with the aim to develop her social skills and for her to become more active. Since joining, Holly has started working with Nisai mentor, Nicola.
Holly’s Mum was concerned that her daughter was not getting out the house and not learning vital social skills.
Since being mentored by Nicola, Holly and Nicola have been meeting twice a week to go shopping, whereby Nicola encourages Holly to interact with people. For example, Nicola would encourage Holly to order her own food or to pay for things independently. Nicola has since made the observation that, slowly but surely Holly has become more and more confident.
When Nicola visited Holly recently, Holly’s mum said that her daughter had made a breakthrough. Holly’s mum reported of how, Holly had asked her if she could go to the shops on her own, Holly’s mum was apprehensive but agreed as long as her dad could take her and a taxi would pick her up. Holly made a small shopping list, went to Iceland and brought some cakes and paid for them by herself. Holly then got a taxi home. Holly’s Mum told mentor, Nicola that she was putting this massive step of progression down to the help Holly has been receiving from Nicola and Nisai.
“I can’t tell you how amazing that is, when a parent tells you, you are making a difference to their child’s life. I am super proud of Holly.” Quoted Holly’s mentor, Nicola
“We really can change the lives of the young people we work with and I wouldn’t change what I do for all the tea in China” Nicola concluded.
Holly joined Nisai with and extremely low self-esteem and almost no confidence, and already in a small amount of time, she feels she has the ability to leave the house independently and go to the shops on her own. This is a young lady who would once refused any opportunity to leave the house, the progress she has made is staggering and it make us all at Nisai very proud, but no more than Holly’s mother and mentor. Holly is still making progress with Nisai and with the help of Nicola, Nisai will support her every step of the way.
Nisai are passionate about developing all our students, the reason Nisai strive to make an impact is for stories like Holly’s.
Nisai changes lives.
