Supporting high achievers
High Ability or ‘High Learning Potential’ relates to students with exceptionally high ability in certain areas.
The difference between Gifted & Talented and Dual or Multiple Exceptionality or ‘DME’ is that students with DME are high achieving but also have barriers to learning or additional challenges. Potential Plus UK estimates that around 85,550 students a year have High Learning Potential in the UK, of that, DME students are a distinct minority and often struggle to have their needs met because of their complex educational needs. Several learning differences and disabilities are more likely to occur among students with High Learning Potential, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc.
Many high achieving students exhibit synchronous gaps between their ability level and their age or maturity, which in mainstream schooling can result in disengagement. Instead, we timetable our students in classes at their current working level, rather than age, allowing any student to study at their ability level. Coupled with well-paced and interactive lessons, this alleviates poor behaviour and creates the ideal working environment for our students.
Our teaching staff are all subject specialists and have also received supplementary training to support students with additional needs both in class, along with our dedicated Student Support team outside the classroom for both parents and schools.
