Units of Sound is a multi-sensory literacy programme for anyone (8yrs+) needing to improve on their reading, spelling and writing skills in English. The programme includes: Reading, Spelling, Memory and Dictation skill areas.
An affordable, flexible programme that is tailored for each and every person – whether you are at school, college, home or at work!
The learning model of Units of Sound is based on revisiting a sound again and again but doing something different with it each time, helping with automatic reading and spelling.
The recording feature in the Reading programme provides a valuable learning tool for self-checking. By recording their voice and comparing it with the programme’s model reading, students can evaluate their own reading. This process encourages self-correction and helps build confidence and independence in reading.
Units of Sound can be tailored to the individual. Each student is placed on the programme at a level which is right for them via a reading and spelling placement.
Yes, Units of Sound can be used in any educational and workplace setting as well as at home.
No. Units of Sound is a structured, multi-sensory English language intervention programme that works well for students with dyslexia. However, it has also been proven to help learners with low levels of literacy and those who have English as a second language.
Units of Sound can be beneficial for EAL students. Students are able to record, listen back and self-assess their reading, which helps with pronunciation. The built-in repetition in all activities is great for students with English as an additional language.
All work and scores are logged automatically in the student’s records, which the tutor can access to monitor progress.
Reading is monitored using the ready-made Reading Check materials. The Reading Fluency materials provide a way for the tutor to measure and provide evidence of progress in reading fluency.
Students need reliable internet connection, a computer with sound capabilities for playback and recording, and headset with mic. Units of Sound cannot currently be used on an ipad.
