Our Mentor Story: Tyler’s Journey from No Qualifications to Aspiring Car Mechanic

From School Leaver to Skilled Learner

When Tyler joined Nisai’s online learning platform in October 2022, he had recently left school with no formal qualifications. At that point, he was uncertain about his future and lacked the confidence to engage with traditional education settings.

Fast forward to today, and Tyler has successfully completed his Functional Skills Level 2 exams in Maths and English. Last year, he also gained qualifications in Science and Digital Skills; a huge step forward in both his academic and personal journey.

Building Confidence Beyond the Classroom

As his mentor, I have had the privilege of supporting Tyler beyond his online lessons. Over the past couple of years, we have taken short drives around the local area, gone for walks along the river, and even visited a nearby country park to feed the ducks. These gentle outings helped build trust, social confidence, and a sense of routine.

One of Tyler’s proudest personal achievements was passing his driving test. He now drives independently, regularly meets up with two friends, and even took a 300-mile road trip to Cornwall over Easter. These experiences have helped him grow in independence and maturity.

A Passion for Cars and a Vision for the Future

In the final weeks of term, Tyler and I visited a local Classic Car Exhibition. He took the lead, showing me around and explaining the intricacies of different engines and models, an area he’s clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about. His interest in cars goes well beyond a hobby; it’s a potential career path he is eager to explore.

Independence at Home and in Life

Tyler used to be very reliant on his mum, but over the past three years, he has made great strides towards independence. He’s learned how to cook a range of meals, starting with biscuits shaped like cars, of course! These small but meaningful life skills have boosted his confidence and prepared him for the next stage.

Looking Ahead: A Future in Mechanics

Although Tyler’s journey with Nisai online education has now come to an end, the foundations are firmly in place for him to pursue his dream of becoming a car mechanic. His time with us has given him not just academic success, but life skills, confidence, and hope for the future.
