Jacob was in Year 9 when he was referred to the Nottingham Hub. On paper, he was their most violent student, coupled with his autism; no other provisions in the area would take him because of this reputation.
When Jacob first came to the Hub he was very quiet and would sit alone in the corner, not engaging with anyone or anything. Over time the staff continually invited him to join in with any activities and engaged him in his Sport & Fitness lessons using football, a sport he loved. Jacob went on to create a Fantasy Football League on the Nisai Virtual Academy which he updated regularly by calculating the scores and averages for every player in the league. During the two academic years he was at the Hub, Jacob never displayed any aggressive behaviour. He became known for his strong peer mentoring; helping other students in Maths and ITQ if they struggled during their lessons or assignments. As part of a peer-led assignment, Jacob delivered a presentation on Sexual Health to all the other students and staff in the Hub, explaining the various diseases and how to prevent them. Over the 2 years, Jacob achieved a grade C in GCSE English, a grade D in his Maths, a Level 2 Pass in ITQ and a Level 2 Diploma in Sport and Fitness. Mentors at the Hub remember Jacob for having a brilliant sense of humour, great social skills and a laid-back approach to life. He is currently looking for full-time employment.
