Boosting Children’s Reading, Spelling and Writing Skills with Units of Sound

February 26th 2024 Cape Town

Nisai have been in collaboration with Out of Africa Children’s Foundation, Cape Town, South Africa, since 2022. Together they have worked to get Nisai’s Units of Sound online literacy intervention programme into disadvantaged areas in Cape Town, so that children can improve their literacy skills.

The new project is at Ikhaya Le Themba – Home of Hope where four teachers are currently being trained in how to use Units of Sound to provide ongoing support for the children.

Home of Hope is an after-school educare centre for children who come from the surrounding areas of the township, Imizamo Yetho, in Hout Bay. The centre has 150 children and has been running for 20 years. Manager, Sanele Krishe, and his wonderful team provide the children with a safe haven where they can get a nutritious meal, support with homework and play games.

Teachers will also be shown how to use the Units of Sound Plus materials for those who need help with the foundations of literacy before starting Units of Sound, as well as Nisai’s new N-HELPP language course.

The response from Ikhaya has been amazing. Sanele and his team of teachers are super excited to have access to Units of Sound, and a much needed, structured, multi-sensory way to help students who have fallen behind in English literacy. Thank you, Nisai, for the donated headsets. With training underway, we aim to have Units of Sound sessions timetabled over the course of the next few weeks to give as many children access as we can. – Hannah MacLellan, Units of Sound Training and Education Manager

Sanele Krishe, Programme Manager, had this to say about the collaboration “What a great morning we had with Hannah MacLellan from the Unit of Sound Project. This training is for helping children who struggle with reading and spelling. It’s an online literacy programme with lots of resources and we are very excited because it will really help our grade 2’s to 5’s.”

Nisai continue to provide literacy intervention programmes to help those struggling with reading and writing. For more information about Units of Sound, click below.
